Avery Seuter started riding the one-wheeled transport in September to help raise awareness of cycling infrastructure and money for upgrades to the East Coast Greenway, our sister station WJAX reported.

Part of his mission was spotlighting the importance and capabilities of sustainable transportation.

He said he first learned about the Greenway when he was a preschooler in the Jacksonville area.

“I remember our teacher took us out to a part of the trail that was just being built, and she told us that at one point in the future it’s going to connect all the way from Maine to Florida — and I didn’t believe it,” Seuter said, according to the Greenway’s website.

He reconnected with the trail when he noticed an East Coast Greenway sign on Interstate 95 in Kennebunk, Maine, and started unicycling the path from his home in Wells to Portland, Maine, before embarking on the rest of the thousands of miles.

The Greenway is 3,000 miles of paths that snake through 15 states and 450 communities, according to the trail’s website.

On Dec. 16, Seuter was in South Carolina’s North Myrtle Beach and this week he arrived in Key West, WBTW reported.

Seuter is the first person known to complete the route while riding a unicycle, covering about 20 to 30 miles a day, the Greenway said in a news release.

The unicycle activist raised more than $3,000 to help the organization, Greenway organizers said.
