Police: 6-year-old allegedly shot, injured Virginia teacher

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 6-year-old student allegedly shot and injured a Virginia teacher on Friday, police say.

Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference Friday evening that a 6-year-old student is in custody after a shooting at Richneck Elementary School, according to WAVY.

WWBT reported the shooting happened around 2 p.m.

Newport News Public Schools confirmed the shooting on Facebook and said that all students are safe. The school district said they are working with the police department onsite to actively investigate the shooting.

In a news conference Friday night, officials said the shooting was not accidental, according to WVEC. Officials also said that the shooting happened inside of a first-grade classroom and the teacher’s injuries are life-threatening.

According to The Associated Press, Drew reportedly said that the teacher’s condition improved by the late afternoon.

A female teacher was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to WAVY.

No students were injured in the shooting, according to WAVY.

Richneck Elementary School has around 550 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the Virginia Department of Education’s website says, according to the AP.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
