4 killed when private jet crashes near Lake Tahoe, narrowly missing school bus

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A fiery plane crash on a California golf course that barely missed hitting a bus full of schoolchildren killed all four people on board, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed.

According to the FAA, two crew members and two passengers, none of whom have been identified publicly, died when the business jet crashed and sparked a brush fire near the Ponderosa Golf Course while attempting to land at the Truckee-Tahoe Airport Monday afternoon.

No other injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged when the twin-engine Bombardier CL 600 jet en route from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, crashed, KRNV reported.

According to the air traffic control audio, the pilot stated that he needed to circle the runway before landing, and air traffic controllers gave him the clearance to land when ready, the TV station reported.

“Very surreal. Condolences to anyone who lost their life on board,” Jesse Quay, who watched the plane crash from his front yard and whose Nest surveillance video captured footage of the explosion, told KOVR. The footage shows a school bus was driving down the street just seconds before the plane crashed next to the road.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board, who were on the scene of the crash Tuesday, told KOVR that it could take weeks to determine the cause of the crash.
