Commission Chairman outlines plans for road work in Oconee Co

DOT wants input on 85 widening in Jackson, Banks counties

Oconee County Commission Chairman John Daniell tells last night’s meeting of the Oconee County Republican Party that the four-laning of Experiment Station Road between Butler’s Crossing and the Highway 441 bridge will begin in May. It’s a project that is expected to take a year and a half to complete.

Chairman Daniell also said construction of the bridges over Highway316 at the Oconee Connector, Virgil Langford Road, and Jimmie Daniel Road will begin in 2024 with completion slated for 2027. The Julian Drive flyover bridge construction is slated to begin in 2028. And he said the intersection at Highway 53 and Union Church road is on the cusp of having the sufficient car count needed to justify a traffic signal.

The Georgia DOT is looking for input on plans for the latest phase of work on I-85 in Banks and Jackson counties. An online public information session is included in a public comment period that extends through March 9. The third phase of the 85 widening project calls for new lanes, north and southbound, for 13 miles between Highways 129 and 441.
