A Jackson County Sheriff’s Department deputy was critically injured and a suspect is dead after a shootout Friday night according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said that Jackson County deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call around 9:20 p.m. Friday to a domestic situation at 6416 GA Highway 124 near Hoschton. The homeowners reportedly wanted a woman who was in the home to leave.
The GBI said when the deputies got to the home, the woman pulled out a gun, pointing it at the deputies. After deputies tried to get her to drop the gun, she started shooting at them. One deputy was hit while the other deputy returned fire, hitting and killing the woman.
The injured deputy was taken to a nearby hospital and according to investigators she is in critical condition.
The GBI said the woman who shot at the deputies has not yet been officially identified pending notification of the family.
This is the 84th officer involved shooting the GBI has investigated this year.
