John Driskell Hopkins of the Zac Brown Band is sharing a health update amid his battle with ALS.
In a new interview with Us Weekly, Hopkins, who received his ALS diagnosis in 2021, noted that he is still able to speak, sing, walk, and play instruments.
“Just the fact that I’m speaking to you and walking around and able to still sing and play is kind of unheard of in the averages of this disease. So we’re very grateful and doing everything we can to stay on top of it.”
The Zac Brown Band founding member spent summer 2024 traveling the country with Kenny Chesney on the Sun Goes Down tour, as he continued to battle ALS.
“For me, keeping going is really important.”
Nevertheless, John is the first to admit that the disease is slowing him down, both on and off the stage.
“I have to play some different parts on the guitar now because my original parts were a lot faster, so I’m adjusting,” Hopkins says. “I’m not jumping on stage with [ZBB members] Clay [Cook] and Coy [Bowles] anymore, and I miss that.”
John has a new song to share called, “I Love You Forever,” which is the first song he wrote following his diagnosis. It’s inspired by what he wants his wife Jennifer and their daughters to remember when he’s gone.
His foundation, Hop on a Cure, has donated over $4 million in ALS research grants.Donations can be made at www.hoponacure.org/donate; HOAC is also set up to support individual fundraising efforts. All the tools can be found at www.hoponacure.org/fundraising.
