Making coronavirus masks for strangers helped woman overcome anxiety

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A woman who had been laid off her job as a preschool teacher has found a new mission in life ― to create masks for those who need them.

Beverly Ramsey said making the masks also helped her through the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic, WXII reported.

Ramsey started making masks at first for family and friends when she lost her job as an educator.

Then she shared the makes with neighbors, taping them to a nearby tree and watching them be taken one by one from a distance. Each Sunday was mask tree and word got out on NextDoor, the Greensboro News & Record reported in May.

Then she decided that she needed to get to know the strangers who benefited from her creative side as Ramsey and her mother churn out about 250 masks a week, WXII reported.

Ramsey had safe, socially distant spots designated as neighbors stood in line to get the masks, the News & Record reported. She also created smaller, child-sized masks, contained in smaller bags, within reach for children.

But not all masks are staying in her Greensboro neighborhood. Instead of taping all of them to her tree, she’s sending them out to those who need them most helping nonprofits provide masks to immigrants and pregnant women, WXII reported.
