Sign-up for Watkinsville vaccination event begins today

April 17 shots at Civic Center

Registration begins today in Watkinsville, with sign-ups in advance of an April 17 coronavirus vaccination event that will take place at the Oconee County Civic Center.

Oconee County leaders today announced details for the community’s first mass vaccination event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. The free event will be held at the Oconee County Civic Center at 2661 Hog Mountain Road in Watkinsville.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Oconee County Government, Athens Masonic District 6 – Prince Hall, and the City of Watkinsville, with vaccines being provided by University Cancer and Blood Center. “Oconee County is proud to be a part of the mass vaccination event,” said Oconee County Commission Chairman John Daniell. “People coming together in order the meet the needs in our community is a cornerstone of what make Oconee County so special.”

Registration will be required for the event. Beginning at 9 a.m. on April 7 Oconee County residents should visit www.cityofwatkinsville.com/234/covidvaccine to register. Those without internet access can call 706-769-5161 during business hours for assistance with registration. The space and configuration of the Civic Center will allow approximately 50 individuals to be vaccinated and observed at 15-minute intervals.

Participants will need to return on Saturday, May 8 for their second dose of the Pfizer COVID19 vaccine.

“We are pleased to be able to offer another opportunity for Oconee County and Watkinsville residents to take just a few minutes to defeat COVID-19,” said Watkinsville Acting Mayor Brian Brodrick. “While we are thankful to all who have helped our community weather this storm, we are all ready to put it behind us. Getting 75 percent of our eligible citizens vaccinated is the fastest way to do so.”

The event is also the second official event of Oconee’s Unity in the Community group, which is seeking to promote engagement and service between diverse members of our community. The group, comprised of a group of local elected officials and engaged citizens, supports events that will promote understanding, solidarity, and harmony among a variety of lifestyles and demographics within Oconee County. Unity in the Community is also planning a second community food distribution on Saturday, April 24 off Epps Bridge Parkway. # #
